John Stamos Reveals He Tried to Quit ‘Full House’ Initially: I Hated that Show (United Latest News)
(United Latest News)- In a recent episode of the talk show “Hot Ones,” John Stamos, who portrayed Uncle Jesse in the popular family sitcom “Full House” from the late 1980s to the mid-1990s, candidly revealed that he initially had mixed feelings about the series and even contemplated leaving it.
“I hated that show,” Stamos said, reminiscing about how it was initially pitched to him as being akin to the 80s comedy “Bosom Buddies,” starring Peter Scolari and Tom Hanks, but “with a couple of kids in the background.”
During the early stages of production, Stamos admitted he had a “big shot” attitude, feeling like the star of the show. However, his ego took a hit when his co-star Jodie Sweetin, who was just a child at the time, stole the spotlight during the first reading.
As Stamos recalled, “Jodie Sweetin, who plays Stephanie (Tanner), delivers her lines, and the audience is dying with laughter, I mean, they’re screaming. I couldn’t even hear my lines; they were laughing so hard at her, and I was just slumped in my seat.”

He vividly remembers rushing to the lobby to call his agent, demanding, “Get me out of this damn show!”
Fortunately, with the support of his late co-star Bob Saget and encouragement from his agent, Stamos decided to give it a chance.

“I struggled with it for a long time, and finally, I said, ‘What am I doing?’ It’s a beautiful series built on sweetness and kindness,” Stamos said, realizing that at its core, the show centered around love. He believed that “we were the best representation of a loving family—not a normal family, but a new kind of normal.”
“Full House” aired on ABC from 1987 to 1995, following the story of Danny Tanner, played by Bob Saget, a widower raising his three daughters with the help of Uncle Jesse, portrayed by John Stamos, and his friend Joey Gladstone, played by Dave Coulier. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, whom Stamos admittedly tried to have fired from the show initially, starred alongside Sweetin and Candace Cameron Bure as the Tanner daughters. Lori Loughlin played Stamos’s on-screen wife, Becky.
In addition to the original series, Stamos also starred in the Netflix reboot titled “Fuller House,” which premiered in 2016 and ran for five seasons.
