‘Margaritaville singer Jimmy Buffett dies at 76
(United Latest News) Jimmy Buffett, the famed singer-songwriter renowned for his laid-back, tropical-themed tunes such as “Margaritaville” and “Cheeseburger in Paradise,” has passed away at the age of 76.
An official statement on his website and social media confirmed his peaceful departure on the evening of September 1st, surrounded by his loved ones, music, and faithful dogs. His life was a harmonious melody, and his absence will be deeply felt by countless admirers.
Born in Pascagoula, Mississippi, on Christmas Day in 1946, James William Buffett didn’t strum his first guitar until his college years, where he pursued a degree in history. His musical journey began with his debut album, “Down to Earth,” recorded in Nashville, Tennessee, while he worked as a correspondent for “Billboard” magazine. Following this, he released five more albums, each achieving moderate sales and radio play, except for the 1974 hit “Come Monday” from his third album, “Living and Dying in 3/4 Time,” which made it to the top 40 of the “Billboard” Hot 100 chart.
However, it was Buffett’s seventh album, “Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes,” in 1977, that propelled him to stardom, thanks to the infectious hit single “Margaritaville.” This song, sung from the perspective of a man spending his summer at a beach resort, questioning life and love, became Buffett’s iconic anthem. In 2023, “Margaritaville” received further recognition when it was added to the Library of Congress National Recording Registry for its cultural, historical, and aesthetic significance.

Apart from “Margaritaville” and “Come Monday,” Buffett’s repertoire featured signature tunes, including the playful “Cheeseburger in Paradise” and “Fins,” as well as introspective tracks like “A Pirate Looks at 40,” “He Went to Paris,” and “Son of a Son of a Sailor.”
Buffett’s 1985 greatest hits album, “Songs You Know by Heart: Jimmy Buffett’s Greatest Hit(s),” remains his best-selling work, with over 5.6 million copies sold. For many, “Margaritaville” was the sole song they associated with him.
Throughout his five-decade career, Buffett released over 30 records, with 17 achieving gold or platinum certification from the RIAA for selling more than 500,000 units. His constant touring with the Coral Reefer Band earned him a devoted fan base affectionately known as Parrotheads.
