Creighton Men’s Tennis Secures Fifth Consecutive Victory, Defeats Marquette 4-3

The Creighton men’s tennis team showcased their dominance once again, clinching their third consecutive BIG EAST triumph and extending their winning streak to five matches with a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Marquette on Friday afternoon in Milwaukee, Wis.

With this triumph, the Bluejays elevated their overall record to 12-6 and maintained a solid 4-2 standing in BIG EAST competition, while Marquette, unfortunately, slipped to a 4-12 overall record and remained winless in league action at 0-3.

Creighton Men asserted their authority from the outset, securing the pivotal first point of the match through impressive performances in doubles play. Senior Matthew Lanahan and junior Alejandro Gandini set the tone with a commanding 6-2 triumph at the No. 1 doubles spot, while sophomores Yuma Daijima and Kirtan Patel clinched the doubles point with a resilient 6-4 victory at the No. 3 doubles position.

As the contest transitioned to singles play, the Bluejays engaged in a closely contested battle, ultimately emerging victorious at the lower three singles positions to seal the overall dual.

Rediscovering Good Friday: A Personal Journey

Senior Shin Inoue ignited the singles action with a commanding 6-0, 6-3 straight-sets victory at the No. 6 singles position, propelling CU to a 2-0 advantage. Although Marquette responded with a win at the No. 2 singles position, narrowing the deficit to 2-1, Daijima swiftly restored the Bluejays’ lead with a dominant 6-2, 6-2 triumph at the No. 5 singles court.

The match was clinched by Gandini, whose stellar performance culminated in a 7-5, 6-1 straight-sets victory at the No. 4 singles position, securing the decisive fourth point for Creighton.

Despite Marquette’s valiant efforts to stage a comeback, securing wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 singles spots, Creighton’s earlier successes ensured their ultimate triumph, as they emerged victorious with a final score of 4-3.

Looking ahead, the Bluejays are poised to continue their winning ways as they prepare to celebrate Senior Day on Sunday, April 7, against Nebraska-Kearney at 3 p.m. at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
