Coco Gauff Stumbles at Wimbledon Against Emma Navarro
Coco Gauff faced a challenging match against Emma Navarro at Wimbledon’s Centre Court, where her usual game plan fell short. Despite seeking guidance from her coaching team, including Brad Gilbert, no effective solutions emerged.
Coco Gauff, who has never progressed beyond the fourth round at Wimbledon, was eliminated at that stage once again. In an all-American face-off, Navarro defeated Gauff 6-4, 6-3, marking Gauff’s latest struggle at the All England Club.
Coco Gauff Quest for Solutions
“We had a game plan going in, and I felt that it wasn’t working. I don’t always ask for advice from the box, but today was one of those rare moments where I felt I didn’t have solutions,” said Gauff, the reigning U.S. Open champion and No. 2 seed at Wimbledon. “Today, mentally, there was a lot going on. I felt like I wanted more direction.”
Currently, only two of the top 10 seeded women remain: 2022 champion Elena Rybakina, who is No. 4, and French Open runner-up Jasmine Paolini, who is No. 7 and will face Navarro next. Rybakina is set to play her fourth-round match on Monday, while Paolini advanced when Madison Keys retired due to injury.
Navarro’s Breakthrough Performance
Navarro, the 19th seed, achieved her first major quarterfinal, showcasing her potential by defeating four-time major champion Naomi Osaka in the second round. “I’m starting to think, ‘Why not me? Why can’t I go deep in Grand Slams?’” said Navarro, 23, who won the 2021 NCAA championship during her first year at the University of Virginia.
Navarro noticed Coco Gauff interactions with her coach and the visible frustration on her face. “Seeing her kind of frustrated and looking at her box — it’s definitely a little bit of a confidence boost,” Navarro said. “I guess it maybe gave me a little bit of momentum and just some energy that I needed.”
Coco Gauff Wimbledon Journey
Gauff, who had a significant breakthrough at Wimbledon at age 15, has not surpassed her initial success. She exited in the fourth round in 2021, the third round in 2022, and the first round last year. On Sunday, her game was riddled with mistakes, totaling 25 unforced errors compared to just 12 winners. Her forehand, a known weakness, was targeted by Navarro throughout the match.

Post-Match Reflections
“I really wanted to attack her forehand,” Navarro said, revealing her strategy. Coco Gauff forehand accounted for 32 of the 61 total points won by Navarro, with 16 unforced errors and 16 forced errors coming from that side.
Coco Gauff acknowledged her shortcomings, stating, “I have the ability to raise my level when players play well, and I feel I didn’t do that today.” She added that her usual mid-match coaching assistance didn’t yield results this time, saying, “I don’t think we were all in sync.”
“No one’s to blame except myself,” Gauff concluded. “I mean, I’m the player out there.”
Looking Ahead
As Coco Gauff reflects on her performance, she remains determined to improve and overcome her challenges. Meanwhile, Emma Navarro continues her impressive run at Wimbledon, eyeing further success in the tournament.
