Rising Expectations: Young Players Take the Lead for High School Football Pirates (United Latest News)
(United Latest News)- In preparation for the upcoming season opener against Betsy Layne, Berea Community (4-7) will rely heavily on less experienced players taking the field. These athletes, many of whom are new to varsity competition, are eager to step up and contribute to the team’s success.
According to Jon Thomas, the first-year coach of Berea Community, the players are brimming with enthusiasm and readiness to showcase their skills. The team underwent significant changes with the departure of 11 seniors, including key positions like quarterback, running back, wide receiver, and offensive line. Furthermore, a top pass catcher also left the program, creating ample opportunities for emerging talents to make their mark.
Coach Thomas, acknowledging the challenge, highlighted the scarcity of experience in key positions due to the recent roster turnover. He emphasized the team’s efforts in training to prepare the younger players for both offensive and defensive roles. Stressing the importance of gaining actual game experience, Thomas acknowledged the limited presence of last year’s varsity players in the current roster.
Among the small number of returning players, there are only five seniors—Tristan Lykins, Dolton Robinson, Landon Rodgers, Asa Smith, and Cameron Thompson. However, the team’s familiarity with Coach Thomas is a positive factor. Having been an assistant coach in the previous three seasons, Thomas has observed the players’ development since their early years and is focused on positioning them for success.
Aidan Huston, who previously played under Coach Thomas at Berea Middle School, now takes on the responsibility of leading the high school team’s varsity offense. Despite having limited exposure to varsity play last year, Huston’s potential is recognized due to his athleticism, speed, and strong arm. Coach Thomas expressed confidence in Huston’s abilities and aims to help him reach his full potential through in-game experience.
On the defensive end, Eric Dixon transitions from a defensive starter to the role of starting running back, succeeding Yamil Cruz. While Dixon’s experience in the running back position dates back to middle school, he is determined to fill the shoes left by his predecessor. Dixon will be supported by Cameron Thompson and sophomore Jake Wilson in the backfield.
With only one returning pass catcher from the previous season, Dolton Robinson’s role as a receiver is set to expand significantly. Robinson’s versatility in the slot position positions him as a primary target for Aidan Huston. Additionally, Thompson’s all-around skills make him a valuable asset in both the passing game and various other positions on the field.
Tommie Banderman, a junior, adds to the team’s offensive prowess as a tall and capable tight end, providing Aidan Huston with a reliable target. On the offensive line, seniors Asa Smith and junior Trey Smith bring their experience to bear, along with junior Jeffery Gilbert taking over at center. Returning juniors Will Madden and Timothy Branham provide further stability on the line.
Defensively, Banderman and the returning senior Tristan Lykins will anchor the line. Cameron Thompson, who registered impressive stats last year, is the sole returning linebacker. The team also repositions players for greater impact; Dixon transitions to linebacker from the defensive line, while Robinson moves from linebacker to safety.
In the secondary, where experience is limited but the potential is high, sophomore Treyshaun Davis will contribute. Coach Thomas emphasized the importance of acquiring knowledge and expertise in this critical area.
Handling special teams duties, Dolton Robinson takes on punting and kick-off responsibilities, while Jake Wilson manages field goals and extra points. The team remains in Class A, District 5, in line with the recent realignment by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association. Rivalries with Eminence and Frankfort continue, and the addition of Sayre to the district replaces Kentucky Country Day.
