Vybz Kartel Free: Dancehall Star Released After Years Behind Bars

The Jamaica Court of Appeal has ordered the release of Vybz Kartel and his three codefendants after years of incarceration. The ailing dancehall star and his companions are to be freed following a lengthy legal battle.

Unanimous Decision by the Vybz Kartel Court

On Wednesday, the court unanimously decided against a retrial for the murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams, whose body was never discovered. “We conclude that the interest of justice does not require a new trial to be ordered,” the court declared. This ruling considered the substantial evidence suggesting Kartel would be unable to endure a potentially longer sentence due to his deteriorating health.

Health Concerns and Inhumane Conditions

The court highlighted the severe psychological and financial effects on the appellants, emphasizing Kartel’s dire health condition. Since 2011, he has been held in extreme conditions described as a brick cell with no air circulation, no water, and a bucket for a toilet. His defense team detailed his severe health issues, including significant neck and facial swelling. Kartel’s defense told FOX 5, “His neck was swollen. If you think of a shirt that is about 18.5 inches in the neck area, you couldn’t close the collar on his neck. His face is actually swollen. And one other thing, he always wears glasses; in this condition, that causes his eyes to protrude.”

Medical Emergency and Legal Battles

In 2023, a sworn medical affidavit from Vybz Kartel private doctor alerted authorities to the worsening of his Graves’ Disease and heart condition, warning that without immediate surgery, his condition could be fatal. Vybz Kartel, legally known as Adidja Palmer, and his three co-defendants have been imprisoned since their 2011 arrests and their subsequent 2014 conviction for the murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams. The conviction relied heavily on circumstantial evidence, including video and phone records from Kartel’s BlackBerry Torch and the testimony of a discredited witness.

Proclaiming Innocence and Overturning Conviction

Throughout his incarceration, Vybz Kartel has consistently proclaimed his innocence and fought to overturn his conviction. His conviction was overturned this spring, and the British Privy Council provided the Jamaican court the opportunity to decide on a retrial or complete acquittal, which would prevent further prosecution. Despite this significant legal victory, Kartel has continued to battle inhumane prison conditions, exacerbating his Graves’ Disease.

Juror Misconduct and Appeal to Privy Council

In 2020, the defendants’ lawyers appealed, but the convictions were initially upheld. The case was then escalated to the United Kingdom-based Privy Council, Jamaica’s final court of appeal, in 2024. The Privy Council overturned the convictions due to juror misconduct, but the fight for freedom persisted. The Privy Council effectively returned the case to the Jamaican Court of Appeals for a final decision.

Conclusion: Vybz Kartel’s Path to Freedom

Vybz Kartel’s journey to freedom has been marked by legal challenges, health crises, and a relentless fight against what he deems an unjust conviction. The recent ruling by the Jamaica Court of Appeal to release him and his co-defendants signifies a turning point in a saga that has captivated the dancehall community and legal observers alike. As Kartel steps out of prison, his future remains a subject of immense public interest and speculation.
