Recently, during the second-annual Big Ten volleyball media days at the esteemed Big Ten Network studios in Chicago, Coach Kelly Sheffield and the talented setters Izzy Ashburn and MJ Hammill represented the program. With the fall camp just five days away, excitement is building as Tuesday marks the first day of practice.
Sarah Franklin is Nearing a Return

Sarah Franklin, the highly-regarded All-American outside hitter, is nearing her much-awaited return to the court. Coach Sheffield expressed optimism regarding her medical clearance for practice. However, he did mention that her availability for the initial practice remains uncertain.
“She will be still to be determined,” Sheffield shared. “When I get the green light, we’re going. I would say in her mind the green light is flashing very strong.”
Franklin, a redshirt junior, had been sidelined since early June due to complications arising from Quadrilateral Space Syndrome, which led to blood clots affecting her nerves and arteries, particularly in the shoulder region. This condition necessitated surgery, forcing her indefinite absence from the game.
During the spring scrimmages, Franklin was unable to participate, and she also missed the Badgers’ foreign tour in June. Nevertheless, she engaged in a week-long training session with the U.S. national team in March, showcasing her dedication and talent.

Coach Sheffield believes that volleyball is a sport that flourishes in person and is now poised to captivate viewers on television as well. The improved camera work and announcer quality have contributed to the sport’s appeal, and Sheffield anticipates that it will only elevate the viewing experience.
