The Big Ten’s concerted efforts to bring volleyball into the mainstream broadcasting spotlight are commendable. The Gophers have been granted one more national broadcast slot on FS1, which will see them take on the Hawkeyes in Iowa City on Sept. 21. Additionally, twelve matches, including the first three fixtures of the season at Maturi Pavilion against TCU, Baylor, and the reigning national champions, Texas, will be broadcasted on the prestigious Big Ten Network. Furthermore, thirteen matches will be streamed on B1G+, while two Gophers matches in the Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge will be available on the Pac-12 Network. The only match without a current broadcast allocation is their encounter with Florida on Sept. 3.
The Gophers’ match against Wisconsin was already destined to be appointment television for ardent sports enthusiasts. Last year, the Badgers acquired Carter Booth, a formidable middle blocker and star freshman, from the Gophers following the resignation of their head coach Hugh McCutcheon. Additionally, the Gophers were the sole team to defeat the Badgers during Big Ten play last season, adding further intrigue to this encounter. With the addition of the new head coach, Keegan Cook, and this being the sole fixture between the two teams this season, volleyball aficionados require no further incentive to tune in.
