Tianlong-3 Chinese Rocket Launch Ends in Fiery Crash Near Gongyi

A Chinese Rocket private company’s space rocket unexpectedly launched during a test and crashed in flames near the city of Gongyi on Sunday. Space Pioneer, the company behind the rocket, reported that the Tianlong-3 rocket experienced a structural failure leading to its accidental launch.

Structural Failure Causes Unplanned Launch

The Tianlong-3 rocket’s first stage separated from its test stand due to a structural issue, according to Beijing Tianbing, also known as Space Pioneer. The rocket subsequently landed in a hilly area near Gongyi in central China.

Dramatic Footage Captured the Incident

Video footage from the incident, shared by The Paper, a Chinese digital media outlet, showed the rocket ascending before losing power and veering horizontally, ultimately crashing into nearby forested hills and erupting into flames. Initial investigations revealed no casualties from the unplanned flight.

Safe Area Contained Rocket Debris

The Gongyi emergency management bureau stated that parts of the rocket stage scattered within a designated “safe area,” causing a local fire. The fire was quickly extinguished, and no injuries were reported.

Development and Testing of Tianlong-3

The two-stage Tianlong-3, also known as “Sky Dragon 3,” is a partly reusable rocket currently under development by Space Pioneer. The company is one of several private-sector rocket makers in China that have rapidly expanded over the past five years.

Rare Unplanned Flight

While falling rocket debris is not uncommon in China, an unplanned flight and crash of a rocket under development is a rare occurrence. Space Pioneer noted that the first stage of the Tianlong-3 ignited normally during a hot test but detached from the test bench due to a structural failure.

Space Pioneer claims that the performance of the Tianlong-3 is comparable to SpaceX’s Falcon 9, another two-stage rocket. In April 2023, Space Pioneer successfully launched the Tianlong-2, becoming the first private Chinese firm to send a liquid-propellant rocket into space.

Since 2014, when private investment in the space industry was allowed, Chinese commercial space companies have rapidly entered the sector. While many firms focus on satellite production, others, like Space Pioneer, are developing reusable rockets to reduce mission costs.

To ensure safety, the test sites for these companies are often located along China’s coastal areas. However, some, including Space Pioneer’s test center in Gongyi, are situated inland. Gongyi, a city of 800,000 in Henan province, serves as a key testing ground for the company.
